Why I Consider Caring for Moms and Kids the Most Important Work We Do
For those that know me, you know I view the human body as something truly miraculous. I often spend my quiet moments—whether it’s during my morning prayer ritual or just reflecting between patient visits—thinking about the incredible design of our nervous system. It is the master controller. It governs everything. And there is perhaps no time when that system is more important, or more under stress, than during the creation of a new life and the early years of childhood.
I have been caring for families here at Health First Chiropractic Clinics located in Galloway, NJ, for a long time. While I love helping patients recover from sciatica or migraines, there is a special place in my heart for prenatal care and pediatrics. Seeing a mother through her pregnancy and then checking her newborn baby shortly after birth? That is the cycle of life in action. It’s nostalgic, it’s powerful, and quite frankly, it’s an honor.
If you live near our Galloway office, you might be wondering why a chiropractor would need to see a pregnant woman or a toddler. Let me share some insights from my years of practice on why this care is so vital.
The Journey of Pregnancy: More Than Just Back Pain
I tell my patients all the time that pregnancy is not a condition to be treated, but a natural process to be supported. However, the physical reality is that a woman’s body goes through massive structural changes in a very short amount of time. The center of gravity shifts forward, the lumbar curve increases, and the ligaments soften due to the hormone relaxin.
This often leads to what we call vertebral subluxations. As a reminder, subluxations are spinal conditions where the boney joints of the spine become stuck and fixated, affecting proper alignment and nerve flow. In a pregnant mother, this doesn’t just mean back pain (though that is common); it can mean a pelvis that isn’t moving correctly.
Comfort and Preparation for Labor
I have treated many expectant mothers who thought back pain was just “part of the deal.” It doesn’t have to be. By correcting these spinal misalignments, we can significantly improve comfort. But more importantly, we are preparing the body for the main event: labor.
If the pelvis is misaligned, it can reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This is where specific analysis comes into play. We want to ensure the neuro-biomechanical function of the pelvis is optimized. When the hips and spine are balanced, the baby has the best possible opportunity to get into the proper position for birth.
Understanding Webster’s Technique
This brings me to a specific protocol I utilize called Webster’s Technique. You may have heard this term thrown around in mommy groups or online forums, but I want to explain what it actually is from a clinical perspective.
Webster’s Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/SI joint dysfunction. In doing so, the neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is facilitated.
I am very passionate about this because I have seen the results firsthand. When a mother’s pelvis is balanced, the muscles and ligaments reduce their tension. This state of balance is crucial. While we never claim to “turn” breech babies—that is an obstetrical procedure—Webster’s helps create a state of balance in the pelvis that allows the baby to settle into the best position naturally. It is gentle, safe, and effective.
Pediatrics: Why Would a Child Need a Chiropractor?
This is a question I get asked often by patients who come in for their own neck pain but leave their kids at home. “Dr. Zimmerman, my child doesn’t have back pain, why should I bring them in?”
I always answer with this: It is better to grow healthy children than to repair injured adults.
The very first trauma a human being usually experiences is birth itself. Even a natural, vaginal birth places tremendous pressure on a newborn’s neck and spine. If interventions like forceps or vacuum extraction were used, that force is multiplied. This can cause those subtle subluxations in the upper cervical spine right from day one.
The Signs of Spinal Stress in Kids
In pediatrics, these issues don’t usually show up as “back pain.” In an infant, a subluxation might manifest as colic, difficulty latching during breastfeeding, or trouble sleeping. I have had parents bring in a baby who has been crying for hours, and after a very gentle adjustment—using no more pressure than you’d use to check the ripeness of a tomato—the baby relaxes and finally sleeps. It is an emotional moment for the parents, and honestly, for me too.
As children grow, they learn to walk, run, and inevitably, fall. They fall hundreds of times! They play sports, they carry heavy backpacks, and they spend hours looking down at screens. All of these “micro-traumas” accumulate.
Immunity and Wellness
One of the most profound benefits of chiropractic care for kids is the boost to overall wellness and immune function. The nervous system controls the immune system. If there is interference in the spine (subluxation), the communication lines between the brain and the rest of the body are compromised.
By keeping a child’s spine clear of interference, we are ensuring their body is functioning at 100%. I have seen families in my practice where the children under regular chiropractic care seem to bounce back faster from colds and deal with fewer ear infections. It is not magic; it is physiology. When the body works the way it was designed to, health is the natural result.
A Personal Note on Family Wellness
I look at my practice here in Galloway not just as a clinic, but as a community center for health. When I see a family walk in—mom, dad, and the kids—it brings a smile to my face. It reminds me why I became a chiropractor in the first place.
