More and more women are discovering the many benefits associated with chiropractic care in pregnancy. The most common complaint where women seek chiropractic care in pregnancy is for low back pain. 84% of patients receiving spinal manipulative therapy reported relief of back pain during pregnancy. There was significantly less likelihood of back labor when spinal manipulative therapy was administered during pregnancy.
Chiropractic care in pregnancy has been shown to, significantly decrease mean labor time, and assists new mothers back to prepartum health. In one study, women receiving Chiropractic care through their first pregnancy had 24% shorter labor times than the group not receiving Chiropractic. In addition, 84% of women report relief of back pain during pregnancy with Chiropractic care. Because the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis function better, there is significant less likelihood of back labor when receiving Chiropractic care through pregnancy.
The method and techniques of prenatal chiropractic care have advanced over the years, but the reasons behind the spinal adjustments will never change. Spinal bones, out of alignment leads to muscular imbalances and instability along the spine. In turn, with instability comes weakness which leads to injury, aches, pain and decreased motion. In addition, the improper positioning of the spinal bone disrupts the nerve impulses coming from the spine to the body’s organs and systems. This could lead to malfunction in the body and ill health. Lastly, a spinal bone out of its proper alignment causes friction on the bones joint surfaces, this causing degeneration commonly called arthritis. The chiropractic adjustment has advanced and improved with time, but the reason why the chiropractor adjusts the spine is still the same. Chiropractors correct the alignment of the spine to improve function and health in the body.
One of the most common problems that affect our health is back pain. As much as 80% of the US population has experienced back pain at one point during their lives. Once pregnant, the increasing size and weight of the abdomen pulls and stress on the lower back and pelvis. Low back pain in a non-pregnant person can be caused by poor posture, repetitive movements and improper lifting habits. Less common causes include hurting yourself via an accident like a slip and fall or an auto accident. A visit to the medical doctor (the second most common reason for doctor visits) usually results in a prescription of medication and or bed rest. Most people do not want to take drugs and are looking to avoid the unhealthy side-effects that comes with taking medications. In pregnancy, it is essential to avoid all drugs and medications as these therapies are toxic to the developing baby. Chiropractic has proven to be the most effective natural treatment at eliminating back pain and correcting the underlying problem. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that chiropractic care was often more successful at eliminating muscular pain than medication. More importantly, chiropractic’s major benefit is that not only can it reduce pain levels, but the care given is designed to actually correct spinal structural problems that can cause back pain.
